Eyes: small surface, high consequence
Eyes react quickly to irritants and can be injured by particles, corrosives, smoke residue and contaminated splash. Squinting, persistent blinking, redness, tearing, cloudiness or rubbing at the face are reasons to seek veterinary guidance promptly.
In an organized decon line, eye care should follow the medical protocol for the incident. At home after a disaster, do not put soaps, disinfectants, or improvised neutralizing solutions into the eyes. When rinsing is appropriate, use veterinary or medical guidance and clean solution rather than contaminated runoff.
Paws: contact point and recontamination point
Paw pads contact floors, soil, floodwater, ash and spill residue directly. Hair between the toes can trap material, and animals later lick their feet. Paws also become recontaminated easily if the animal stands in dirty wash water or walks back across the contaminated side of a decon area.
This makes the exit route important. Clean footing, a final foot check, and a clean leash or crate help preserve the work already done on the rest of the animal.
Coat: protective layer and contamination reservoir
Fur may keep some material away from skin initially, but dense, long, double, corded, oily, or matted coats can retain contaminants and make visual inspection difficult. Brushing an unknown material through the coat can spread it or drive it closer to skin, which is why Texas A&M advises against using brushes or combs to push disaster contaminants deeper.
Coat type also changes how much water, time and handler effort a decon process may require. A short-coated dog and a heavily coated working dog should not be assumed to need identical resources.
Use anatomy to plan the sequence
Before decon begins, note where contamination is concentrated. Face, ventral body, feet, and equipment contact areas may need different handling. Record wounds or irritated skin because damaged skin can change risk and washing tolerance.
The objective is not to make every animal look spotless. It is to reduce hazardous material without causing additional injury, stress, hypothermia, or recontamination.
Equipment contact zones deserve the same inspection
Anatomy is only part of the map. Collars, harness straps, service-dog vests, protective boots and blankets create pressure points where liquid or particles may be held against the coat. After gear is removed, check the underlying skin and fur rather than assuming covered areas stayed clean.
The reverse can happen too: the animal may be cleaned while the equipment remains contaminated. Mark removed gear and keep it on the dirty side until the incident plan determines how it should be cleaned, replaced or disposed of. A clean coat plus a dirty harness is an easy route to re-exposure.
